Foundation Oncology Skills for Nurses working in Paediatric and Adolescent Cancer Care

This face-to-face course is for all nurses working within paediatric and adolescent haematology/oncology who do not have a degree or advanced level oncology qualification.

Although this course is primarily aimed at nursing staff other staff groups who work within this speciality are welcome to attend.

Learning Outcomes

You will gain an understanding of the nursing care needs of paediatric patients with haematology/oncology conditions. You will also acquire a basic knowledge of haematological disorders and solid tumours.

The course will cover the nurse's role and management of:

  • Febrile neutropenia
  • Blood products
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Mouthcare
  • Tumour Lysis

It will also cover basic knowledge of the different treatment modalities and their side effects:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Stem cell/Bone Marrow Transplant

You will learn the basics of reading a treatment protocol / flowsheet.

You will also explore how to assist in maintaining a safe environment for children in your care with a haematology / oncology condition.

Finally, you will learn to contribute to the assessment of information and support needs of children and their families.
